Socio-spatial Measures of Bedouin Homes as an Effect of Lifestyle in Northeastern Badia of Jordan-Constancy and Change. Al-Manarah, AABU Publication, Mafraq, Jordan. Vol.16, No.3, pp27-71, 2010.
Home as a social, cultural, and physical package reflects users? changes of way of living. This is shown in transforming external and internal home layouts to fit privacy and territorial needs. In this study, it was hypothesized that a shift in Bedouins lifestyle, from nomadic to settled, affects the socio-spatial measures, from a traditional home layout to a modern home due to urbanization. To test the hypothesis, a field survey in the form of a structured questionnaire was administered to 316 respondents from 34 Northeast Badia villages. In addition, a semi-structured questionnaire was administered to elicit data from 16 key informants from Northern Badia villages. Analysis of Variance Tests were used to measure the difference among the research variables. The results indicated some constancy and change in the socio-spatial arrangement. It indicated a relationship between change in lifestyle and socio-spatial measures. Results also suggested that lifestyle components, such as social role, attachment to local community, male household occupation, and family size are positively associated with privacy control, and that social role positively affects territorial control.
