Vice President for Administrative Affairs sponsors a seminar

On behalf of the President of Al al-Bayt University, the Vice President for Administrative Affairs, Prof. Omar Al-Ateen sponsored a seminar entitled "Electronic Extortion and its Impact on the Family", which was organized by the Center of Community Development and Service. Al-Ateen welcomed the attendees, stressing that crime is increasing with the technological development. He indicated that through this development, the world has become a small village and this has its pros and cons, but with the oversight and protection provided by the concerned agencies from the competent authorities through holding such seminars and events, awareness of many dangers of technological development was increased.

A member of the Studies and Research Department of the Jordanian Women's Union, Dr. Haya Al-Daoum, spoke about electronic extortion through the direct threat to the family entity, indicating the true meaning of extortion, which is due to the means of coercion, threats and defamation, which the blackmailer uses to obtain a different claim in order to bring money or take what he wants.

She confirmed that extortion is classified as a cybercrime, which comes as a result of technological development through the use of various social media with the surrounding world, as well as dealing with strangers, starting with building trust with the victims in a virtual world, then pictures, videos or messages are sent and exploited through extortion. She also explained that there are many cases of suicide for girls in the world were caused by some blackmailers in the virtual world.

Al-Da'um pointed out the need to inform the family with everything that young people go through and what they are exposed to in order to avoid any danger that may occur in the future, stay away from fake pages, control electronic feelings and not trust them at all.

First Lieutenant Rashad Ahmed Abu Rahma of the Cybercrime Combating Unit in the North/Public Security emphasized the role of the Unit in the awareness aspect and receiving complaints, indicating the dangers of not dealing properly with cybercrime, its negative impact on the local community and the problems faced by individuals while using electronic devices. He pointed out that the importance of awareness of cybercrime and knowledge of safe means of using social media has become an urgent necessity for members of society, especially with the tremendous development in communication technology.

Abu Rahma touched on how to prevent the dangers of cybercrime, whether threats or blackmail cases, and highlighted the legislation that addresses these issues and the role of the Cybercrime Unit in reducing them.

The seminar was attended by university students and moderated by the Director of the Center of Community Development and Service, Dr. Abeer Tleilan.
