A lecture on the applicability of the rules of international humanitarian law to UN forces at the Faculty of Law at Al al-Bayt University.
The Faculty of Law, represented by the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Dr. Samer Dalal'a, held a lecture entitled "The Applicability of the Rules of International Humanitarian Law to the UN Forces," in which Professor of International Law Dr. Ali Al-Shara'a spoke, and it was presented by Dr. Burjas Al-Shobaki.
Dr. Al-Shara'a stated that the UN forces are established by a resolution of the Security Council with the aim of maintaining peace in conflict zones around the world and are divided into peacekeeping forces, which are military forces whose goal is to maintain peace and prevent attacks on civilians, and the rules of humanitarian law apply to them in a fragmented manner because they do not carry out combat operations directly, and peace enforcement forces, whose goal is to impose peace on the two parties to the conflict using direct combat operations, and international humanitarian law applies to them in full, and peacebuilding forces, which are civilian forces that do not carry out any combat operations.
Al-Shara'a added that there are 16 peacekeeping forces operating around the world that are subject to international humanitarian law, which aims to reduce the damage resulting from the use of armed force in conflict zones as much as possible and to maintain international peace and security.
For his part, Dr. Burjas Al-Shobaki pointed out the importance of this lecture in raising the level of awareness among the college's students of international and legal issues.
