As part of its efforts to enhance academic awareness of contemporary digital issues, and within a series of scientific and cultural events, the College of Beit Al-Hikma for Political Science, under the patronage of the University's Vice President for Community Affairs, Professor Dr. Hani Akho Arshideh, organized a workshop entitled:
"Artificial Intelligence and Combating Fake News in Political Discourse,"
presented by Dr. Othman Al-Tahat, Editor-in-Chief at the Jordanian News Agency, in the Prince Hassan bin Talal Amphitheater at the College of Engineering at the University.
The Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Ahed Abu Dheeb, affirmed that organizing this awareness workshop reflects the commitment of the college and the university to keep pace with contemporary issues, noting that such workshops contribute significantly to refining students' skills, enhancing their political and media awareness, and linking them to modern developments in the field of digital communication. He also stressed the need to empower the new generation with digital media tools and develop critical thinking skills, enabling them to distinguish between reliable and misleading content and to influence political discourse and decision-making.
For his part, Dr. Othman Al-Tahat, a lecturer at Al-Zarqa Private University, affirmed that artificial intelligence has become an important tool in analyzing and uncovering political discourse, noting that media and communication science constitute two interrelated pillars in light of the development of modern technology, highlighting that one of the functions of the media is to provide the public with news and political readings, in addition to its role in strengthening social cohesion and preserving societal values derived from historical heritage.
Al-Tahat pointed out that digital media has begun to monitor traditional and institutional media, which calls on decision-makers to understand the mechanisms of this media and interact with it consciously. He also explained that artificial intelligence tools contribute to confronting fake and misleading news, but at the same time pose challenges that require more organization and development in their use within media frameworks.
He added that the media has recently transformed from a traditional tool into a complex interactive environment, where it has become easy to spread false news and manipulate information for political or ideological purposes, noting that artificial intelligence has become an effective tool for discovering this type of misinformation, through text analysis techniques, identifying digital patterns, and tracking content sources.
Dr. Al-Tahat explained how to employ artificial intelligence techniques in analyzing political discourse and uncovering fake news, pointing out that digital media and social networks, despite the publishing and sharing tools they provide, have become a fertile environment for the spread of misleading information that may affect the formation of public opinion.
Al-Tahat addressed the impact of artificial intelligence in monitoring, analyzing and uncovering political discourse, and the mechanisms that this technology provides to uncover fake news and misleading information, which has become one of the most prominent challenges facing societies in the digital age, noting the need to train students on modern digital skills and link them to the political and media reality. He affirmed that artificial intelligence is not just a technology, but a strategic tool in the battle of awareness and truth, against the flood of fake news that invades digital spaces.
The workshop, which was introduced and moderated by the Assistant Dean of the College, Dr. Sayel Al-Doghmi, concluded with the presence of a number of faculty members and students of the college, with an interactive discussion between the students and the lecturer, during which questions were raised about the future of artificial intelligence and its relationship to combating fake and misleading news.
