Seminar on the harms of smoking at Al-Lebeit University

The Deanship of Student Affairs / Cultural and Social Activities Department organized a seminar on the harms of smoking and ways to quit it in collaboration with the College of Applied Medical Sciences at the university. This seminar comes in response to the recommendations of the Higher Education Council "Towards Smoke-Free Universities." 

Dr. Shaimaa Muhammad Ali discussed the toxic substances contained in cigarettes and their impact on the respiratory system, heart, and arteries, as well as how tobacco companies have used misleading promotional methods to increase their sales. Dr. Faten Al-Tahami addressed the negative effects of nicotine on the external appearance of smokers and its harms to pregnant women and fetuses, emphasizing the need to avoid secondhand smoke due to its significant dangers.

Dr. Firas Taqatqa highlighted that smoking causes addiction, which is a chronic compulsive habit of consuming a narcotic substance due to the presence of the addictive nicotine. He emphasized the need to use evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy that can change the beliefs and behaviors of smokers towards smoking, while considering the withdrawal symptoms of addiction.

At the end of the seminar, which was attended by the Dean of the College of Applied Medical Sciences, Professor Dr. Muhammad Nazzal, the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Dr. Saif Shbeil, the Deputy Dean Dr. Haileh Al-Sarhan, and the Director of the Cultural and Social Activities Department, Muhammad Basbous, the lecturers answered questions and inquiries from the students.​​
