Al al-Bayt University (AABU) is cognizant of the importance of educational institutions in combating climate change. For this purpose, a detailed and multifaceted Climate Action Plan integrating teaching, research, sustainable practice and community activities has been developed within AABU. It aims at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, building resilience, and facilitating effective change for environmental sustainability within the institution and outside it.
 
• AABU Climate Action Plan
As countries all over the world continue pondering the challenge confronting them of taking climate action, educational institutions are required and assist in nurturing future global leaders and innovators who are well focused on sustainability. Al al-Bayt University (AABU) Edwin takes his climate change obligations seriously in the heart of the Jordan, they wish to address concerns on climate change with measures taken and with means available. Due to these emerging concerns and many other forthcoming environmental challenges, AABU has formulated a Climate Action Plan that outlines strategies to be followed in reducing greenhouse gas emission and improving resilience and sustainable activities within and beyond the campuses of the institution.
 
AABU's Climate Action Plan involves a cross-cutting structure, which includes, but is not limited to, education, research, operations, and engagement with the communities. To achieve the goals of the university and benefit the community, it is essential to combine international strategies and basic principles of eco-friendly operation of the institutions. Within this integrated framework, AABU aims to be at the forefront of environmental protection in the region and help respond to the global call on combatting climate change and protecting the planet for generations to come.
 
This introductory outline raises the framework for assessing the partial sections of AABU’s Climate Action Plan showing that the institution is environmentally conscious as well as ensuring that its academic community embraces responsible civic engagement and environmental awareness.
 
• Objective
The purpose of policy is to help Al al-Bayt University (AABU) become more climate responsive and climate friendly, by cutting down its carbon emissions and while encouraging healthy practices throughout the university community. Climate change and sustainability have opportunities and responsibilities where AABU has pledged to lead the responsibility of the practices of embracing ecologically friendly care on the campus together with the responsibilities of teaching the need to appreciate sustainability in all fields of study.
 
• Climate Mitigation Strategies
 
1. Renewable energy
AABU will strive to increase the proportion of renewable energy in the campus energy mix which will include the use of installing solar panels and purchasing wind or solar energy from third parties. Achievable targets for the percentage of renewable energy to be employed on campus in the coming years will be established.
 
2. Energy efficiency
AABU intends to undertake energy efficiency improvement measures for all the structures on campus. This includes retrofitting and replacing with energy-efficient alternatives lighting and climate control systems and advocating for the energy efficiency actions among the university community members.
 
3. Sustainable Transportation
The utilization of more sustainable transportation alternatives such as bicycles, public transport and electric vehicles will be supported on the campus. Those who use environmentally friendly means of transport will be given incentives.
 
4. Waste Management
AABU is well aware of the environmental hazards of ineffective waste disposal and will establish a waste management program that is focused on waste management hierarchy of waste prevention, reuse and recycling. The entire community will be encouraged to practice waste segregation and will be provided easy access toWaste segregation.
 
5. Education and Awareness
Students will understand the effects of climate change and the need to fight global warming through the introduction of the topic of sustainability and climate change in any field of study available in the school. The campaigns as well education on sustainability provision will be extended to all members of the university.
 
6. Sustainability Research
Surveys on the sustainability as well as issues of climate change will be embraced within AABU. Funding and encouragement will be given for projects crafted out of environment issues with the aim of advancing new methods of business and its operations.
 
7. Green Certifications
The university shall, in the course of implementing its strategic plan, pursue various international environmental ratings such as Leed with the intention of integrating principles of sustainability into the practices of the Schools.
 
8. Collaborations and Partnerships
AABU shall partner with government agencies, commercial entities, and other colleges to initiate programs and activities with the objective of tackling climate challenges and advancing sustainable practices within the area.
 
9. Implementation and Monitoring
In order to achieve the climate action policy objectives, AABU will appoint a sustainability committee which will be responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring the strategies. In this regard, goals and objectives will be formulated and followed to measure progress and make necessary adjustments. There is a need to emphasize the engagement and dedication of all members of the university’s community if the climate action policy is to be a success. AABU will continue working towards creating and enhancing environmental stewardship on campus for collective protection of the environment now and in the future.
