Abstract
The term "AL- kibar "in the Holy Quran, a contextual study in the light of structure and semantic value ."
The Arabic term ?Al-kibar? occurs six times in the Holy Quran; three times predicated to verbs: ?a??bahu al-kibar,? ?balaghani al-kibar? and ?massani al-kibar.? In two of the other cases, it is preceded by a preposition: ?min al-kibar? and ?cala al-kibar.? For the last occurrence, ?al-kibar? is used as an additional part of an objective phrase? ?yablughannacindaka al-kibar.?
The present study attempts to explore and show the semantic values and the aesthetic dimensions of the linguistic contexts in which term ?al-kibar? is used. It also aims at showing the different uses of this term in analogous verses of the Holy Quran; its infinitivity, singularity, and definitiveness, making use of its position and order in the verses, the unique appropriateness of its use, its contextual values and the relations that hold among the verses of the Quran with reference to this term.
The present study concludes that the use of the term ?al-kibar? in the Holy Quran, while generally indicative of weakness and old-age, has many semantic, syntactic and aesthetic values and meanings; its employment in the different structures of the six verses of the Quran and its use with different verbs were a semantic necessity and a contextual requirement. Also, its different syntactic positions and orders as well as the unique appropriateness of each occurrence are demanded by each verse, exclusively built on a special use of the term in question.
