Al al-Bayt University is organizing a specialized course on the flash flood early warning system.
The Risk Analysis Modeling and Simulation Center at Al al-Bayt University's liaison office in Amman organized a specialized training course on early warning systems for flash floods, held from September 22 to 25, 2024. This course is part of a series aimed at enhancing local capacities to deal with natural hazards, particularly flash floods, which are recurrent natural disasters posing a threat to infrastructure and local communities.
The course focused on providing specialized training for participants through both practical and theoretical sessions, covering how to use modeling and simulation techniques to analyze risks associated with flash floods, in addition to developing early warning systems that help predict floods and reduce potential damage. Topics covered in the course included:
1. Early warning system operation mechanisms: A detailed explanation of how to design and operate early warning systems using meteorological data and flood forecasting models.
2. Risk analysis and prediction: Sessions on using modeling and simulation techniques to predict areas at risk of flash floods based on environmental and climatic factors.
3. Disaster management and planning: Training on how to respond swiftly and plan for crisis management in the event of flash floods.
Case studies from regions in Jordan that have experienced flash floods in recent years were reviewed, with a focus on successful mitigation strategies implemented to protect populations and infrastructure.
Dr. Moayad Shawaqfeh, director of the Risk Analysis Modeling and Simulation Center, emphasized the importance of this course in strengthening local institutions' ability to predict and effectively respond to flash floods, stating, "The climate changes we are witnessing today require us to develop advanced capabilities to deal with natural disasters, especially flash floods that appear suddenly and cause significant damage." He added, "Using early warning and modeling techniques greatly helps in reducing harm and protecting lives and property."
