In accordance with the nature conservation and social accountability strategies of Al al-Bayt University, we are seeking to introduce sustainable procurement principles into our activities. This policy outlines our intention to take into account the environmental, social and economic effects of procurement.

 

  • Objectives

The general objectives of this policy includes:

  1. Minimizing the negative impact of procurement processes on the environment.
  2. Preferential treatment of vendors who have a proactive approach towards sustainability.
  3. Supporting ethical employment practices and development.
  4. Maximizing value generation over the use span of the goods and services that are procured.

 

 

  • Policy Guidelines

In order to achieve these objectives, Al al-Bayt University is pursuing the following guidelines:

Vendor Assessment

  1. Vendors shall be given preference based on their environmental and ethical responsibility.
  2. Labor practices and fair trade compliance of vendors have also been assessed.
  3. Vendors have been urged to what potential impacts their products and services could create and how eco friendly their services and production processes are.

 

Evaluation of Products and Services

  1. Products and services have been considered for their environmental, social, and economic impact through a value chain approach from production through use to disposal.
  2. Emphasis has been placed on the purchase of non-perishable, non-disposable, to be used and including but not limited to products not made from virgin raw material but produced from recycled content, and recyclable.
  3. Have products and services that are harmful to the environment and society been avoided?

 

Contractual Obligations

  1. Some organisations have integrated sustainability criteria into the contracts and other agreements with the vendors.
  2. Vendors have been urged to persistently improve their sustainability performance.
  3. Staff Development and Awareness
  4. Staff involved in procurement have been appropriate trained in such a way that they will ensure that they postulate this policy efficiently and actively.
  5. All staff and students have been made aware of sustainable procurement practices.

 

Local and Ethical Sourcing

  1. If possible, source for goods from the domestic suppliers in order to create employment as well as reduce the carbon emissions from transportations involving shipping the goods from afar.
  2. Restrict the procurement of goods to those which are manufactured and delivered in a manner that does not lead to the trafficking or exploitation of people.

 

Sustainable IT Ensure that any obsolete IT equipment will be disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner including the appropriate disposal of electronics waste.

  1. Purchase energy saving computing devices and encourage the use of more efficient computational and word processing applications.
  2. A policy on the ethical disposal of obsolete IT equipment be instituted, including the proper recycling or disposal of electronic waste.

 

 

Energy and Water Efficiency

  1. Buy energy conserving appliances and machine especially for appliances and machines.
  2. Implement the purchase of devices and technologies that will enhance the reduction of water use within the university.

 

Sustainable Food Procurement

  1. When purchasing the food products for the university canteens, only the sustainably produced, fair trade, organic food products should be sourced.
  2. Encourage the purchase of vegan options to limit the food-related environmental footprint of the university.

 

Green Building Materials

  1. When planning construction and renovation works, green building materials should be chosen first.
  2. Make sure that green construction requirements are met by contractors and manufacturers.

 

Monitoring and Review

  1. The purchasing policy of the university will also be actively reviewed so as to be in line with this policy.
  2. Assess Sustainability of suppliers and consider sub contract for projects with sustainable performance=
  • Oversight and Monitoring

This policy has been executed by Al al-Bayt University through the establishment of the Sustainable Procurement Committee that is to oversee the implementation of the policy and evaluate its impact. This committee will be periodically reviewing and revising the policy for its use in relation to emerging changes in the environment.
