Dr. Amin Ali Al-Azzam
Head of the UNESCO Chair for Democracy and Human Rights
In 1994, the UNESCO Chair for Democracy and Human Rights was established at Al al-Bayt University based on a bilateral agreement between UNESCO and the university. Through the UNESCO Chair, education on the concepts and dimensions of democracy and human rights is promoted, reflecting on graduating generations aware of the importance of understanding rights and responsibilities toward society. The aim is to create a cooperative society embodying global peace through constructive dialogue and acceptance of others, in line with the core principles on which the organization was founded. Students are also provided with knowledge of all treaties and international agreements developed by the United Nations in this field, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Humanitarian Covenant, and treaties on civil, political, and economic rights related to individuals and minorities, as well as all related protocols issued by the international organization.
Accordingly, since the UNESCO Chair began its responsibilities, specialized courses have been developed to teach the concepts of democracy and human rights at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Additionally, lectures on these topics are given during international occasions such as Human Rights Day, International Women's Day, Labor Day, and the anniversary of the establishment of the international organization, among others, in many educational institutions and civil society organizations in Jordan.
