The Ego and the Other According to Sheikh Ma?-Al-Eyenein Perspective
Abstract
This study highlights the mindset of the late Sheikh Ma?-Al-Eyenein to
examine his vision, attitude and approach on the Other i.e. the non-followers,
where his conscious character represents a state of awareness that emerged
in Morocco at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the
twentieth century. This personality combined the qualities of a scholar, a
leader, and a model educator, leading the community to rally around him and
subsequently adopt his religious and intellectual movement?one that had a
wide-ranging impact on that region. The study has relied on historical,
analytical-descriptive and inductive approach. The study concluded that the
?Other? in the thought of Sheikh Ma?-Al-Eyenein is not viewed as an adversary
or opponent; rather, Islam acknowledged the Other at a time when others
denied them, maintaining that disagreement can be overcome through the
unity of Sufi orders, by rejecting sectarianism and embracing tolerance?this
being the significance of ?brotherhood,? understood as a path leading solely to
Allah, and that differences in approach should not create conflict. Therefore,
the study emphasized the need to curb the phenomenon of takf?r when used
as a means of inciting hostility toward the Other.
